Authentic Chanel bag???

I was in a small town consignment shop today and found a (supposedly) black Chanel quilted handbag. The quality seemed excellent, a minor scratch on the front gold "C's" red leather interior, everything seemed to match what I've seen in authentic Chanels. However, it does not have the long gold chain strap that all others like it I've seen have. It has a black leather handle. Does anyone know if this design was ever made by Chanel??
